CHRISTIANIAS KULTURFORENING

DECLARATION from the EU “Bottom Meeting” held at the Free City of Christiania, Copenhagen, December 12-15, 2002, in tents and tipis at the Meadow of Peace.

If the wounds of Europe shall be healed, we have to focus on all the groups living outside the limelight and the TV cameras, minorities without land such as Gipsys and Sorbs, Samis and Szekles, national minorities separated from their motherlands, homeless people and and other social outcasts. If we want a living Europe and not just a technically-bureacratic European Union, it shall emerge from the bottom. Community and solidarity is based upon living people and on an understanding and respect of the ethnic and religious multitude characterizing the continent. We will not end up as a failed union like the Yugoslav or Soviet one, unions which disintegrated because of a lack of mutual respect and reverence between the leading elites. The EU Bottom was neither in favour of or against the European Union as such, but it was against top-down dominance and for mutual respect and cooperation. In our view Europa has its own profile, with many languages and cultures which shall have space to develop and inspire other cultures. This Europe also comprises countries like Croatia and Romania, Turkey and Russia, valuable cultures contributing to the symphony of Europe. Europe is not an either-or, it is a both-and Europe. Europe is not a product, but a process and a goal. The EU Bottom wellcomes the EU enlargement and looks forward to the next enlargement.
